Important Tips on License Renewal
June is license renewal month for dentists in Maryland.
Licenses renew every two-years—depending on whether
your initial license was either in an odd-numbered year or
even-numbered year. (Check your current license for the
expiration date.) Each year, several dentists forget to
renew their licenses. The penalties for failing to renew can
be stiff—sometimes, it involves forty hours of “donated”
dental care. Fines and monetaries penalties for failing to
renew include a late renewal fee and a reinstatement fee for
lapsed licenses. In addition, your practice could be shut
down for a month or more while you wait for the State
Board of Dental Examiners (SBDE) to have its next
meeting to determine the status of your license.

The SBDE will mail you a notice two months before your
license expires. It will be on colored paper. Do not ignore
this. The notice will have instructions for online renewal.
(Most dentists renew online.) Thirty hours of CE are
required every two years in the two calendar years prior to
your renewal—so for those renewing in 2008, you must
have completed thirty hours of CE total in 2006 an  2007.
If you have not completed your CE requirements by the
required date, you may apply for a six-month extension at
any time during the final six months of your license so that
you may successfully complete the required CE. The
extension is for the CE requirements only, YOU STILL
MUST RENEW THE LICENSE ON TIME and PAY THE
APPLICABLE FEES ON TIME even if the CE extension is
granted.

You will receive a final notice 30 days before your license
expires. This is the LAST correspondence that you will
receive regarding renewal. If you fail to renew, the next
communication will be an order to cease and desist the
practice of dentistry. You could be charged with practicing
dentistry without a license. So please, do not forget to
renew your license. For more info, contact the SBDE at 1-
